Yes, I'm an Artist.

Updated: Apr 6, 2020

"Oh, you're an artist?"

We've all heard it. THAT question with the same eye roll, confused tone, and "better than thou" attitude.

We know the statistics. We know the stereotypes. But we're so much more.

What they don't know is our 4+ years of earning a Bachelor's degree at the very least learning about everything from the renaissance era to the postmodernists. Do they know how to captivate an audience with an innovative technique? No. Do they realize the countless hours we've spent studying dates, artists, and media? Also, No. Some of us have taken that step further and earned a Master's or Ph.D. in the arts. Are they really going to scoff at a doctor? They will and some of you will let them! I say we stand up for ourselves. Throw it back to them about how your career choice puts life and joy back into this dark world. Give proof, strut your confidence, and above all else, believe in yourself. You've got this! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Artists are important to our society. They may not realize it but we know. Keep that in mind the next time you receive that eye-roll attitude.

It's a little secret between us; artists are essential for this world. Without people like us, their homes would lack their accent pieces, their lives would have a little less pizzazz, and everything they know and love would have less appeal and pretty much cease to exist.

So Artists, pull out your cards and hand them one with this sly line: "call me when you realize your personality needs style." Or just think it. You know, whatever works for you.
